The April data is out for the Net Applications 'market share' survey of operating systems (more accurately referred to as a usage share). For the first time, Linux has reached 1%. This past month the Linux share increased by 0.12% which is well above the average monthly increase of 0.02%.

Wow, good news for Linux fans! I'm hoping that this particular OS can increase in popularity and break into the consumer market so that Microsoft will finally have some serious competition.

This seems way to low, how did they get this figure? Is this based on market share for the home computing platform or something? The amount of linux servers running apache must contribute to higher than 1%?

I have tried red hat, ubuntu 8.04 and now ubuntu 9.04. So far, I have not been able to convert to linux. However, ububtu 9.04 is the most promising because I could finally get my X-Fi and ATI hardware to work on it.
Problem for me is I need to run Photoshop. If there is a way for me to run some Windows software in Ubuntu, I might be able to make the switch. I dislike Windows' stability and speed. Ubuntu 64 bit is faster than windows.

I still use windows (sorry) on my main PC simply because the software I use doesn't interact well with Linux - but I have Linux on all other systems in the office simply because linux is a far better os. Keep plugging away guys - we're on the exponential curve - can't be long to critical mass

How do they come up with these numbers anyway? The jump from 0.90 to 1.02 is relatively large, as was the drop from 0.91 to 0.71 a few months ago. Do they have uncertainty estimates? Inquiring minds want to know.

One of the main problems with Linux is that it is not as well known as windows, for example, very few people know what linux is, where as even the most computer illiterate people know what windows is.

It's just a matter of time before this number continues to grow. Microsoft can't seem to stop screwing up their operating systems fast enough. The only thing that could stop this trend as if Apple somehow breaks into a bigger part of the market, which they seem to be doing slowly.

I am ecstatic to see this. I don't think most people understand just how cool Linux is. The virus free aspect should have brought people in by the droves by now. This is great news to see a solid uptrend in users.

Eh, the only thing I ever really use Linux for is on servers. Linux based servers as by far, the best in my opinion, but leave the operating systems up to Microsoft.

It is a good news for Linux lovers. But the question is that why it is taking Linux so much time to grab market share? Is it because Windows is supported more easily by anyone while Linux requires more skills?
