Mozilla Looking for Alternative to Tabs
From the Victim of Success dept.:
Mozilla Labs has launched a design competition that aims to find an alternative to tabbed browsing.
Mozilla's Firefox has helped to bring tabbed browsing to the mainstream, although rival Opera was the first well-known browser to offer tabs in 2000.
Microsoft eventually relented and introduced tabbed browsing with IE7 in 2006, but now it seems Mozilla thinks the concept may have had its day.

i never use tabs i just have more than one browser open. may be the new alternative will be better.

I really like to tabbing feature, and don't really see how it can be improved. I said that about Windows 95 though!!!

Have been using Mozilla as my browser of choice for years and I find tabs to be very convenient. Looking forward to seeing what they've come up with.

Never quite knew what the difference was between "New Window" and "New Tab" Don't they both serve the same purpose?

If it aint broke fix it, Tab browsing has always been effective so I dont see any reason for a change.

first they need to fix some crashes in their latest version of their browser.it is causing me many problems for me

I choose FireFox over other every other web server thingy
Explorer never worked for and Opera well I dont understand it
Also Google Chrome is just umm too Google for me

I personally love using tabs although I do wish it were easier to make a new one, like in Google's Chrome. As far as a tab alternative, people will have to think really hard to come up with something that will replace them.

I think it is great that the moguls of the internet still keep innovating and evolving...this kind of competition can only be good for end users. Hopefully we can all keep up!

I love Firefox and I believe other browsers are just trying to improve upon what Mozilla pioneered. However, I still enjoy the simplicity of Chrome.

It seems like a difficult user convention to change. Tabs are simple and elegant and makes sense. I can see this getting very messy if Mozilla try to introduce something that is aesthetics led as oppose to usability lead.
I have great faith in the Mozilla team (they deserve as much) so fingers crossed and hold tight as we could be in for something special!

I've been flitting between Chrome and Firefox for the passed few months so will be interested to see if Prism influences me at all.

Mozilla should proceed with caution else they might be taking a step back like Vista. Don't mess with what works cuz then we will need a whole new set of addons.

Im amazed. Tabbed browsing is the best thing that happened to the internet since HTTP. I hope they dont make some foolish mockery of a web nav. tool just to be different. I love firefox and I'd hate to see them crash and burn over a pissing contest.

i love the tabs they work well for me. I cannot think of any odea why they would want to change them. What could they change them too?

I was using opera tabbed browsing until i found firefox tabbed browsing. Opera has still lots of bugs in it. I dont know why some of the websites are never work with opera. But firefox is almost friendly with all of the websites.

Tabs in Mozilla is much better and more convenient to use. It saves space in my task bar and it is much easier for me to identify the sites I have opened.

I like the tabs as they are. Only thing that could use some help is the overall stability of FireFox... crashes alot

I wonder what they would replace it with. When I came accros mozilla the first time it's the thing I loved the most about it. Everything in one browserwindow and the ability to re-open all the lastest viewed tabs when you closed the browser and got back to it. And now I'm curious to see what they will come up with next. I'm sure it will be great again.

Why fix something that is not broken? I like the tab system and if they get too fancy trying to make a "next gen" type of browser then I will switch to something basic. There seems to be an emerging trend of companies fixing things that are not broken.

I love my tabs wayyyy too much. I use a plugin that all I have to do is hover over the tab and it switches at a specified time. I would not be happy if they completely removed tabbed browsing.

Tabs have found wide acceptance as can be seen by even IE relenting to it. An alternative to tabs would be something worth watching.

I switched to Firefox when they introduced tabbed browsing and been using it eversince. I don't know how else it can be better, but hey, if they have a greater concept, then great! Can't wait to see it.

This is great news. I am glad Mozilla isn't resting on their success of the tabs feature. This leaves the door open to invent a better browser system.

Personally, I love Firefox. The ability to have tabs and set up a macro to open the ones that I use the most in one window creates a far better work envirnoment for me than anything that I.E. has currently!
