How'd this get started?: At the time I was working as a web programmer (well, I was really doing a
MSc in biotechnology, but I did a lot of website projects), and I needed
two machines: a desktop, and a Linux server to run all the cool scripts
and databases. I needed the desktop because I used Homesite to program all
the scripts, and photoshop for images. The gimp was already pretty
powerful, so if I could write an alternative to homesite I could do
everything on one machine. So I did. After a while I had a stable editor,
and on the gtk development mailinglist I met a guy that had written a lot
of HTML toolbars. We merged, and changed the name to ProSite. Some time
later, we changed the name to Bluefish, because the name ProSite was used
by other programs, some of them in the web development area, and we wanted
to avoid any legal issues. So in 1998 we released the first version of
Bluefish.
