Programming Language: C
Proprietary Equivalent: Solsoft Security Policy Designer and Security Policy Server
Description: Firewall Builder consists of an object-oriented GUI and a set of policy compilers for various firewall platforms. In Firewall Builder, a firewall policy is a set of rules; each rule consists of abstract objects that represent real network objects and services (hosts, routers, firewalls, networks, protocols). Firewall Builder helps users maintain a database of objects and allows policy editing using simple drag-and-drop operations. Preferences and object databases are stored in XML format.
"Firewall Builder creates an abstract firewall that combines useful features found in many real firewall systems. In this sense it is not an iptables or ipfilter or OpenBSD PF GUI, it is a synthetic firewall. It transforms rules defined by the administrator into configuration of the target firewall using a component that we call policy compiler. We have developed our own library of classes that allows us to build new compilers by combining previously developed elementary blocks that transform policy rules. We can build compilers for new firewall platforms rather quickly."

How'd this get started?: Vadim - "The project started out of an observation that OpenSource firewall toolkits did not have a decent management interface. That was back in 1999 or 2000 so I was working with ipchains and ipfilter. I had lots of experience with commercial firewalls, such as Checkpoint Firewall-1 and wanted to be able to manage ipchains on Linux with the same level of comfort. The idea of using the same interface for different firewall platforms seemed to be interesting, too."
