Konstruct

[ | Report broken link ]

Description:
"Konstruct" is a build system which helps you to install KDE releases and applications on your system. It downloads defined source tarballs, checks their integrity, decompresses, patches, configures, builds and installs them. A complete KDE installation should be as easy as "cd meta/kde;make install".

How'd this get started?: Stephan: "I saw how users forbear from installing KDE from source because they think it's complicated even if it's relatively easy compared to other projects.

Also there are not always and immediately binary packages for KDE for every distribution available. The lack of binary packages is even worse for development releases of KDE where users additionally fear to damage their stable KDE installation by installing binary packages with a fixed prefix.

But KDE needs as much feedback as early and possible, preferable without the influence of distributor-specific patches. So I started to look around for a maintained build script which besides attacking above points of course also has benefit of automating commands and installing everything in right order.

The GNOME project had used for some time the GARNOME build script (1), based on the GAR ports system (2) developed by Nick Moffitt, to encourage their users to install GNOME development releases. Its then maintainer Jeff Waugh had also added the standard KDE tarballs to it and I once or twice sent him patches with fixes/updates. But KDE in there usually was rather outdated.

At that point in December 2002 I decided to create Konstruct based on a copy of GARNOME. This besides being able to commit changes directly also allowed to include additional KDE applications and to keep a "stable" edition with KDE bugfix releases a long time after the next development release went public."
