Microsoft open sources .NET Micro Framework: Microsoft Posted by: comforteagle

From the Micro dept.:
Back in July, Microsoft announced it was making .NET available under its Community Promise, which in theory allowed free software developers to use the technology without fear of patent lawsuits. Unsurprisingly, many free software geeks were unconvinced by the promise (after all, what's a promise compared to an actual open licence?), but now Microsoft has taken things to the next level by releasing the .NET Micro Framework under the Apache licence. Yes, you read that correctly: a sizeable chunk of .NET is about to go open source.

Microsoft, EU reach accord on antitrust: Microsoft Posted by: comforteagle

From the Crime & Punishment dept.:
...The new settlement offer addresses charges that Microsoft distorted competition in its favor in the market for web browsers, by giving its Internet Explorer (IE) browser an unfair advantage over rivals.

..To address the browser case the software giant has offered to create a new ballot screen inside its Windows operating system that lists a maximum of 12 browsers and gives them all exactly the same visibility and ease of use as IE.

Linux Foundation to Microsoft: stop secretly attacking Linux: Microsoft Posted by: comforteagle

From the Both Sides of a Mouth dept.:
Linux Foundation executive director Jim Zemlin has a message for Microsoft: he wants the software giant to stop attacking Linux. Zemlin contends that Microsoft is engaged in a covert war against the open source operating system and that the company's hostile behavior is detrimental to the growing number of Microsoft customers who deploy mixed Windows and Linux environments.

Zemlin's comments about Microsoft are a response to a patent auction carried out by Microsoft to sell a number of patents that the company allegedly said were related to Linux. The patents, which were originally obtained by Microsoft from SGI, were sold to Allied Security Trust (AST), a patent-holding group that grants its members perpetual licenses before reselling the patents.

Microsoft Uses Open Source Project To Extend Management To Linux: Microsoft Posted by: comforteagle

From the Interesting Headline dept.:
Management software is one category where Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) has never quite measured up to competitors. Redmond hopes to change that with an unlikely weapon: using code from the OpenPegasus project to extend its System Center suite to Linux and Unix environments.

Cross-platform management is the No. 1 customer request for System Center, and using open source code to get there represents recognition by Microsoft that it's far from a Windows-only world. It's also a significant move in the company's bid to be seen as a legitimate top-tier choice for enterprise management.
