Fedora 9 Released: Linux Posted by: comforteagle

From the Brand New Hat dept.:
Hello Fedora community -- I wanted to take the occasion of my first release as Fedora Project Leader to say a few -- OK, not so few -- words to everyone about what this release means to me, and what I hope you see in it too.

...It's hard to believe all of the amazing new features in Fedora 9 came together so quickly. Thanks to the tireless work of hundreds of FOSS developers, and the watchful eye of our Feature Wrangler, John Poelstra, we were able to get a huge number of cool, shiny things into the distribution.

LiveUSB, PackageKit, PolicyKit, FreeIPA, easy partition resizing, one-click encryption, RandR support and a faster X, TeXLive, Firefox 3, GVFS, ext4, GCC 4.3, and so much more.... There are far too many improvements to list them all, but certainly even to the naked eye there are worlds of difference between our present and our past -- and the change is overwhelmingly for the better! Go check out the full list at http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Releases/9/FeatureList on the wiki.

OpenOffice.org 3.0 Beta: Open Source Posted by: comforteagle

From the Oh! OOo dept.:
The most immediately visible change to OpenOffice.org 3.0 is the new "Start Centre", new fresh-looking icons, and a new zoom control in the status bar. A closer look shows that 3.0 has a myriad of new features. Notable Calc improvements include a new solver component; support for spreadsheet collaboration through workbook sharing; and an increase to 1024 columns per sheet. Writer has an improved notes feature and displays of multiple pages while editing. There are numerous Chart enhancements, and an improved crop feature in Draw and Impress.

Behind the scenes, OpenOffice.org 3.0 will support the upcoming OpenDocument Format (ODF) 1.2 standard, and is capable of opening files created with MS-Office 2007 or MS-Office 2008 for Mac OS X (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx, etc.). This is in addition to read and write support for the MS-Office binary file formats (.doc, .xls, .ppt, etc.).

OpenOffice.org 3.0 will be the first version to run on Mac OS X without X11, with the look and feel of any other Aqua application. It introduces partial VBA support to this platform. In addition, OpenOffice.org 3.0 integrates well with the Mac OS X accessibility APIs, and thus offers better accessibility support than many other Mac OS X applications.

Sun ships OpenSolaris: Open Source Posted by: comforteagle

From the New Toy! dept.:
A mere three years after starting the OpenSolaris project, Sun Microsystems today releases the first official OpenSolaris version. OpenSolaris includes the all-important Project Indiana, a project from Debian founder Ian Murdock to make OpenSolaris’ package management system more like that of Linux. OpenSolaris is based on the original Solaris kernel but includes features such as the Zettabyte File System (ZFS) which offers a range of tools including instant rollback and checks to prevent data corruption.

gNewSense 2.0 Released Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Minus "non-free": Linux Posted by: comforteagle

From the GNUbuntu dept.:
gNewSense 2.0 has just been released. It is based off Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron which was released just a week ago, so this is a brand new thing for everyone who wishes to run a pure Free Software system. However, there is much more to it than being a system for uncompromising Freedomware enthusiasts.

Even if you are not eager to run 100% pure Free Software system, gNewSense is a great way to see just how much is still missing from a truly GNU and Linux based Free Operating System today therefore emphasizing what Free Software developers and community testers should focus on improving or developing. That said, it also shows just how far has a Freedomware OS come, as many may run it without any problems and missing functionalities if you have the right hardware configuration.

Fedora 9 Preview: Linux Posted by: comforteagle

From the Straight Outta Beta dept.:
After some minor delays (like all rawhide flights grounded for a few days of repair...), the Fedora Project is proud to announce the release of Fedora 9 Preview!

This is a Preview release, it is fairly close to what the final product will be like. This is the most critical release for the Fedora community to use and test and report bugs on. This is the last major public release before the final GOLD Fedora 9 release on May 13th (we hope).

Firefox and Safari updates tackle alternative browser bugs: Mozilla Posted by: comforteagle

From the Patches dept.:
There's patching work ahead for users of alternative browsers. Mozilla updated its Firefox web browser on Wednesday in response to the discovery of a vulnerability involving its Javascript Garbage Collector function.

The security bug means that memory corruption might be caused through specially-crafted Javascript code. Successful exploitation creates a means to execute arbitrary code on vulnerable systems.

Linux Kernel 2.6.25 Released: Linux Posted by: comforteagle

From the From His Master's Git dept.:
It's been long promised, but there it is now. Special thanks to Ingo who found and fixed a nasty-looking regression that turned out to not be a regression at all, but an old bug that just had not been triggering as reliably before.

That said, that was just the last particular regression fix I was holding things up for, and it's not like there weren't a lot of other fixes too, they just didn't end up being the final things that triggered my particular worries.

The full changelog from 2.6.24 is 7.5M, with a 12MB compressed patch. Tons and tons has changed, but if you've been following the -rc releases, you'll already know about the big things. The changes from the last rc (-rc9) are fairly small and mostly pretty trivial, and the shortlog is appended.
