Subject: PC Plus article...

Hi,

Out of interest I was wanting to check something.

It was mentioned in a PC Plus article (April 2004- already!!) issue that
a large propotion of the code for Microsoft Services for Unix is apparently
lifted from Internix (which it is claimed lifted code from OpenBSD).

Of course as OpenBSD is open source software, ( I don't know if it's
"free" according to the RMS definiton.), anyone can use the code, right?

However, given that SCO wishes to criminalise Linux because it got
too large a market share it does to me seem like it's one set of rules
for 'them' and a different set for the open source community.

Microsoft is not known for it whole hearted support for open-source
or "free" software and I would have my doubts as to thier intentions.

Of course if any code from OpenBSD was 'leaked' into Windows,
then by virture of the GPL (if OpenBSD is covered) any derative work
using that leaked code would presuambly have to be released under
the GPL. As Microsoft is unlikley to do this, if leaking has occured then
portions of SFU and Windows may actually be illegal without having an
appropriate license. Of course the fact that the source code of Windows
is not availlble for checking makes it diffuclt to confirm the absence of
any leakage...

If SCO can run attempet to run a (IP) 'protection racket' then so
can the authours of open-source and free software ;-)
