i think you've co-opted the apple philosophy by saying 'things just work'. they do in the apple camp, but very rarely on the *nix side i've found. i just purchased suse 9.2 pro and my short list of things i would have to fix to get it running on a sony laptop goes:
1) graphics driver (intel855 chipset doesn't report vaio screen resolution correctly)
2) bluetooth (can transfer files, but will not recognize mouse after each restart)
3) wireless (can't have wireless and wired interfaces set to dhcp at the same time)
4) trackpad works, but no control over it. jerky and clicks with barely a brush
5) power saving schemas are primitive and buggy at best
6) yast is nowhere near as good as the redhat config tool. even the rh4.3 tool was better than yast. slow and awkward at best. just to change one network setting takes several minutes while it inexplicably loads and saves
the books are still the best though!
