in fact, CONGRESS, pursuant to its legislative activitites and the Constitution, is the entity that ultimately 'gets to choose how' copyrighted material is used. and that's where the principle of 'Fair Use' comes in. I think it is very unclear to many people in this age how to balance fair use (e.g. by end users, libraries, educational missions, etc.) vs the interests of copyright holders (often, large corporations). Given that much of the debate is currently dominated by the holders, it is probably a good thing that folks such as 'FP' are around to remind us that 'fair use' (NOT to be confused with wanton piracy) really does exist and is an important pillar of our society and culture.

<FONT color=#191919>I guess some people don't understand that the copyright owner gets to choose how their property is used. There should be ABSOLUTELY NO EXPECTATION that downloaded music be available to use in the same manner as a CD</FONT>
I guess some people don't understand that copyright owners have absolutely NO RIGHT to choose how I use that property after I have purchased it.
Once I buy a thing, it is mine. If I want to listen to it in a way they don't approve of, then tough shit to them. They have absolutely no rights to tell me that I cannot.
Copyright is EXACTLY what it sounds like. The right to control copies of their work. I have no problem with their copyright. I don't share the music online. Simple. I might make copies for my own use, but that's allowed under Fair Use exemptions to copyright.
Where you get the idea that copyright allows them to "<FONT color=#191919>choose how their property is used", I have no idea. There should be ABSOLUTELY NO EXPECTATION that they can prevent me from doing what I damn well please with MY PROPERTY after I have BOUGHT IT. </FONT>
